Renaissance Plaza was the first major mixed-use new construction project in central Harlem in many years, sparking a revival in Harlem that included a major wave of new buildings and improvements in the neighborhood. The limited equity cooperative apartments, located on 116th Street in Central Harlem, were developed under the New York City ANCHOR program (Alliance for Neighborhood Commerce, Homeownership, and Revitalization) in association with Department of Housing Preservation and Development, the New York City Housing Development Corporation, and the New York City Housing Partnership. The 241-unit building includes retail and parking facilities, featuring a Carver Bank branch and a Harlem Children’s Zone Headstart. At the time of completion, it was the largest single-site mixed-use project receiving City funding and targeted to middle-income households.
