The Edge represents one of the largest and most ambitious new construction mixed-use projects in the history of the City of New York. Taking advantage of the pioneering young market of Williamsburg, the Project occupies over seven prime acres along the East River, which supersedes a former derelict manufacturing site. The configuration of the respective buildings not only anchor a new waterfront community for Williamsburg, but the towers embrace an eco-friendly design as the buildings host interior planted courtyards, connected by terraced gardens and tree-lined walkways.
The Edge consists of over 1.1 million square feet including 565 condominiums in two towers striving for LEED gold, 347 affordable units in two mid-rise buildings, over 60,000 square feet of retail, 509 below-grade parking spaces, 1.75 acres of open space, two public piers, a public esplanade and a water taxi pier. A major component includes the 347 units of 80% AMI affordable housing. Unlike most projects, the 80% AMI housing will be kept affordable in perpetuity; it will not phase out after a 30-year period. In terms of accessibility, the public pier and esplanade have revitalized a long fallow waterfront and the advent of the water taxi service provides a new form of transportation to Midtown and Lower Manhattan for local residents.
The Edge has been widely praised for the quality of its design and construction, both of the buildings and of the exceptional waterfront park that will also be an asset for the residents of the new Project. As a result of the goodwill generated in the community, and the excellent press coverage the Edge has received, Douglaston Development is widely recognized as having produced the finest residential community in Williamsburg, and in fact in all of Brooklyn.
